Someone once told me that as you get older, the days go slower but years move faster. I didn’t believe it when they said it and honestly, I’m not sure I believe it now. For me, the days actually pass by quickly and with out warning, the years have done so as well. There is so much more to do. So many experiences yet to embrace. Life is graciously passing by every day.
So today I pause.
I have decided to take a breath and for a moment rest and reflect. There aren’t many days like this one. Not many times to just stop and be thankful. So today, today becomes a gift of all kinds.
I am thankful for my life. I am humbled by friendships that have proven to be life-long and because of that, I am thankful for history. Not history as in the global events we learn about in school. I am thankful for MY history. Richness is found in the appreciation of experience. Contentment is enjoyed as resolve to rest in knowing you are indeed right where you are suppose to be. Therefore today, I am rich and content.
Years ago a very wise old man made a profound statement to me in a not-so-profound place. To understand the significance of his words, you must understand the context of the moment. It’s took place on a church blacktop driveway on a hot summer day. We stood there, grief in our hearts, but hope on our minds. There was nothing peculiar about the moment. I imagine many people have had that same frame in their life movie; the realness of death, accompanied by sadness, embraced with hope and the assurance of eternity. It was all there on that blacktop driveway of the little country church. He lost his wife. We lost our friend. Yet, in the midst of all those emotions and eternal assurances came words from a grieving husband that this fast-paced life needed to hear. “I’ve never seen a hearse with a u-haul behind it.” As we stood there, looking at the black hearse about to transport his beautiful wife, my life just seemed to have a new purpose to it. Work hard, life gets faster and faster, but make sure you stop, reflect on what is truly important. Because someday…
