So You Want to be a Leader?

Recently I had a conversation with some of the leaders around me in which I posed a question to them. What kind of a leader are you? In order to help facilitate the dialogue, I provided some possible ways to be a leader.

  1. Lead by EXAMPLE
  2. Lead by FEAR
  3. Lead by NOT leading at all
  4. Lead by MOTIVATING
  5. Lead by ENCOURAGING
  6. Lead by EMPOWERING

We spent some time reflecting on these various styles of leadership. They all felt that options 1,4,5 and 6 were ones most appropriate to their personal style of leadership. I could not disagree with them at all. I am surrounded by outstanding leaders. It’s not by chance that they are here on our team. It is totally by design. My core value for leadership is to surround myself with people who are better than me. People who know more than I do and are willing to fight for me and with me in any leadership situation. They are true leaders. Our discussion continued throughout the morning as we reflected on the style of leadership we would need to provide over the next thirty days. Why thirty days? Because over the next thirty days the course of our company as we know it will be determined. We have been around awhile, but at no time in our history have we been at such a critical juncture. The trajectory of the next three years will be significantly set in the next thirty days. Pressure? Yes. Excitement? Maybe. Fear? No!

Leaders lead. They set the course and provide every opportunity for all those who walk with them to become not just successful, but all they are created to be. Thirty days people, thirty days.
